Parents Urged To Monitor Children In Peninsular Malaysia To Prevent Involvement In Illegal Street Racing
SIBU: Parents in Sarawak have been urged to closely monitor the activities of their children who are studying or residing in Peninsular Malaysia to prevent them from becoming involved in illegal street racing, which poses serious risks to life.
Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said he had received information from the police regarding the involvement of several youths from Sarawak in illegal street racing activities on highways around Kuala Lumpur, including an incident detected in the early hours of Saturday morning.
“I was informed by the police that some of those involved were Sarawakian youths.
“Therefore, I would like to urge all Sarawakians, especially parents, to pay close attention when your children are in Kuala Lumpur for their studies or personal matters. Please monitor them to ensure they do not engage in racing on highways. Once they lose control, it could cost them their lives,” he said.
He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026 International Automotive Business Convention and Exhibition at Kingwood Hotel here on Saturday.
The Dudong Assemblyman also reminded young people that illegal street racing not only violates road traffic laws but also increases the risk of tragic accidents, loss of life and social problems that can adversely affect families and communities.
Instead, Dato Sri Tiong encouraged youths with an interest in the automotive industry and motorsports to participate in activities organised through legitimate and regulated channels.
“We must ensure that motorsports contribute positively to the automotive industry through skills development, innovation and responsible participation,” he said.
Also present were Bawang Assan Assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Chairman of the Sibu Car Repairers Association and President of the Federation of Motor and Engineering Workshop Owners’ Association of Malaysia Penghulu Teo Nging Poh, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the 2026 International Automotive Business Convention and Exhibition Kapitan Goh Kee Seng, and Technical Supervisor of the Sibu Car Repairers Association and the Federation of Motor and Engineering Workshop Owners’ Association of Malaysia, Kapitan Tay Guan Boo. -UKASnews
