KUCHING: The International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) proposes the establishment of its campus in Sarawak as a strategic measure to strengthen the development of high-value human capital in the region.
The proposal was presented during a courtesy visit by the IIUM delegation led by IIUM Rector Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Osman Bakar, to the Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi at the Astana Negeri Sarawak here, on Monday.
During the visit, the IIUM delegation presented the Framework Proposal for the Establishment of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (UIAM) Campus in Sarawak, which outlined efforts to establish a permanent campus as a centre for higher education and human capital development in the state.
The proposal does not only involve the construction of new infrastructure, but rather aims to develop the academic ecosystem of IIUM in Sarawak by leveraging international networks and the university's core values to produce skilled human capital capable of providing high impact.
Through the initiative, IIUM aims to make Sarawak a hub of excellence in higher education that combines the university's global brand with the unique culture, legal system and socioeconomic landscape of the state.
Among the main focuses highlighted is establishing a physical campus that connects the community of Sarawak as well as communities in the Borneo region, including Sabah, Brunei and Kalimantan, with a world-class learning network.
The proposed establishment of an IIUM campus in Sarawak is expected to open up more opportunities for the people of this state to access international-class higher education without having to migrate to Peninsular Malaysia, thus strengthening Sarawak's position as a hub for world-class education and talent development. -UKASnews
