Miri Airport Upgrade To Blend Modern Infrastructure With Sarawak’s Cultural Heritage
MIRI: The RM445 million Miri Airport upgrading project is set to integrate modern infrastructure development with local cultural heritage, reinforcing the identities of Miri and Sarawak as internationally recognised destinations.
Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that the project, approved in April 2026, is expected to increase annual passenger handling capacity from approximately two million to four million people.
He emphasised that the terminal's development should be leveraged to showcase Sarawak’s cultural identity by incorporating elements of art, traditional crafts and local cultural motifs into the airport's interior design.
“A modern airport and local cultural identity can complement each other. Miri Airport must tell our own story,” he said when speaking at an engagement session organised by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) here on Thursday.
According to Dato Sri Lee, local art, traditional crafts, cultural motifs and handicrafts, particularly those of the Orang Ulu community, could be incorporated into the terminal’s interior design to reflect the rich heritage of Miri, Baram and the Kelabit Highlands.
However, he stressed that cultural elements must be incorporated accurately and with due respect for the origins and significance of each tradition, while ensuring the upgraded terminal remains safe, efficient, accessible and comfortable for passengers.
Meanwhile, he noted that efforts to secure approval for the project had been undertaken since 2016, involving various discussions with the Federal Government and several Transport Ministers before official approval was granted in April 2026.
The Senadin Assemblyman added that the need to expand the airport remains crucial to accommodate growing passenger traffic and to strengthen Miri's role as a key gateway to northern Sarawak.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Federal Government and the Sarawak Government for their support in realising the project.
The engagement session, held from 7 to 9 October, brought together the Public Works Department (JKR) project team, representatives of cultural associations, local artists and craft practitioners to gather input on the terminal’s interior design concept. -UKASnews
