SUTMaC Meeting Focuses On Traffic Management & Mitigation Measures
KUCHING: Rapid urban development across Sarawak is placing increasing pressure on traffic networks in major towns and cities, according to Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
Speaking while chairing the first 2026 meeting of the Sarawak Urban Traffic Management Committee (SUTMaC), Dato Sri Lee said growing population centres, expanding commercial activities and rising private vehicle ownership are contributing to heavier traffic flows, particularly along key routes and major junctions.
He noted that Sarawak recorded more than two million registered vehicles by the end of 2025, with private cars and motorcycles making up the majority. The steady growth in vehicle ownership, he said, continues to place significant strain on urban road networks.
Congestion during peak hours has become increasingly noticeable along several major corridors and intersections, a situation that may also heighten road safety risks if not effectively managed.
Dato Sri Lee added that large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) are crucial to improving long-term urban mobility but may temporarily disrupt traffic flow during construction.
“These challenges highlight the importance of coordinated and effective urban traffic management,” he said, noting that issues including road capacity, congestion mitigation, parking management, smart traffic light systems and accident prevention require close cooperation among government agencies and stakeholders.
Dato Sri Lee said SUTMaC serves as a key platform for collaboration among government departments, local authorities, transport operators and enforcement agencies to share information and coordinate traffic management strategies.
He also revealed that standards and guidelines for Sarawak’s smart traffic light systems were officially issued in February following technical input from the Sarawak Multimedia Authority.
During the meeting, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), Sarawak contingent, presented traffic accident statistics to help agencies analyse trends and develop more effective mitigation strategies.
Representatives from local authorities also provided updates on congestion issues and traffic improvement initiatives being implemented under the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan.
Dato Sri Lee emphasised that efficient traffic management is vital not only to improve daily commuting but also to support economic growth and the smooth functioning of urban centres. -UKASnews
